Harriet Beecher Stowe:
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an abolitionist, and the author of an extremely influential book, Uncle Toms Cabin. The novel brought the issue of Slavery in America to a whole new level. More and more people were learning about the extent of the issue, and it brought attention to the abolitionist movement.
Charles Sumner:
Charles Sumner was a highly educated Lawyer, and an anti-slavery leader during the Civil War. He was committed to civil rights and had strong feelings for equality. In 1851 he was elected to the US senate, where he continued to campaign against southern aggression and slavery.
John Brown:
John Brown was an abolitionist who worked in the underground railroad. He believed that the only way to tend slavery was to uprise violently on the government. Eventually, Brown was executed due to his beliefs.
Stephen Douglas:
Stephen Douglas was a Democratic politician, who lost to Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election. He also promoted popular sovereignty, and was a re-elected democratic senator of Illinois. In Douglas' eyes popular sovereignty was a right to the people of a a state or territory.
Abraham Lincoln:
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president, the 1st republican president, and the president during the civil war. Lincoln's goal was to put slavery to an end. He was the author of the emancipation proclamation and led the north to victory. He was assassinated in april of 1865.
Jefferson Davis:
Jefferson Davis was the first and only president of the Confederate States of America. His citizenship was taken away from him after the defeat of the south, and he moved to Europe. He was a mediocre leader, but clearly not a very successful one.
Ulysses S. Grant:
Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United Staes. He was a representative of the Republican party. During the Civil War he was viewed as a symbol of victory of the Union. IN 1864 he was made General-in-chief by Lincoln, He was very wise, and fought some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil war.
Robert E. Lee:
Robert E. Lee was a military general for 17 years, and served during the Civil War. He was responsible fro educating all the men that served on his behalf. Lee was put in charge of putting down abolitionist, John Brown. His first military encounter was in Cheat Mountain, Virginia.
William Tecumseh Sherman:
William Tecumseh Sherman was a Major General for the Union. He was recognized by Abraham Lincoln for his work, after a Union defeat. Lincoln promoted him to Brigade General. He was demoted from his position after expressing his belief that the war was not going to end quickly.
